Delia walked into her office and locked the door behind her. She threw her car keys on her desk and her coat on a nearby chair. She was surprised at the young woman’s reaction to her offer. It was a very generous amount of money that would help her brother with his medical expenses, and yet she had rejected it. Perhaps she had misjudged her. She had backbone, something that Delia usually admired in people. But regardless, Kate Tyler had lied to her to achieve her goal. This was unforgivable. If she wouldn’t accept money, then another tactic was needed to get this woman out of their lives.

She sat down and shuffled distractedly through a pile of papers awaiting her attention. Invoices, advertisement samples, and images of new bottle labels were scattered across her desk. She pushed them aside and picked up a framed photograph of her family on a rare day when they were all together at the winery. She and Frank, Davis, and Briggs. It was one of those days that was a turning point although none of them knew it at the moment the picture was taken.

It was harvest time. After the family photo was taken, Frank had gone back to the vineyards to work. Much later, he had returned to the house a little more tired than usual but then, after supper, he had gone back out into the vineyards. “For one last look,” he had said, not knowing how prophetic his statement would be. He collapsed, away from the house, away from anyone who could help. When he hadn’t returned, Davis went out to look for him. By the time he found his father, it was too late.

He was buried two days later, and then everyone went back to work. There was a threat of an early frost and too much depended on getting the grapes harvested. There was no time to grieve, only time to move on.

Delia had lost a partner when Frank died, but she soon found that she was in her element. She put all of her energies into running the winery and she ran it with an iron fist.

Delia and her husband had started the winery twenty-two years ago. Davis had graduated from his master’s program at Cornell and briefly worked in France and was still learning the business. But they convinced him to return to the States and join them at the newly named Wingate Winery.

Davis had the technical knowledge, her husband had the management skills, and she had a vision of what the winery could mean for her family and future generations. Through sheer determination, they had taken a floundering winery and vineyards and brought it all into the twenty-first century. They tore out the old non-producing vineyards, planted new hybrid grapes, and bought more land as it became available. Davis began using new winemaking techniques and Delia updated the brand. And they succeeded. Despite downturns in the economy, despite reinventing both themselves and the new brand of Wingate Winery, they had succeeded, even beyond her expectations.
